Scan|Design Foundation Fellowship Exchange Programs
University of Washington - Seattle
The Scan|Design Foundation Fellowship Program at the University of Washington was established in 2005 and the first Fellowship awards were given in 2006 to University of Washington students for study in Denmark during the 2007 calendar year and for Danish University students for study at the University of Washington during the 2007-2008 academic year. Fellowships are meant to provide students from all academic fields of study with an opportunity to spend a full academic semester or year in Denmark or Seattle.

Formal exchange agreements are in place between the University of Washington and the following Danish Institutions:
- University of Copenhagen.
- Aarhus University
- Aalborg University
- Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts
- Copenhagen Business School
- Danish Technical University
Fellowships are awarded to both graduate and undergraduate students for study in Denmark. Fellowships are for one semester or an academic year of study.
Many of the Danish Universities offer free pre-semester Danish Language and Scandinavian Culture Classes for International Students prior to the start of the semester. The Foundation provides a stipend for all Fellowship recipients that choose to participate in these classes.
The Foundation believes that the exchange experience is greatly enhanced by the ability to explore the host country and provides an excursion budget and on-site coordinators in both Copenhagen and Seattle to organize and lead several student directed cultural and experiential outings in the host country.

The Fellowship program was under the exceptional leadership and guidance of Associate Professor, Marianne Stecher-Hansen for the first five years. The Foundation along with all the students and faculty involved in the Fellowship program are extremely grateful to Professor Stecher-Hansen for all the heartfelt care and attention she has given to this program. Beginning April 1, 2011, Professor Stecher-Hansen transfered the leadership of the Fellowship program at the University of Washington-Seattle to the Scan|Design Foundation Endowed Chair in Built Environments at the University of Washington.
