Scan|Design Foundation Fellowship Program
The Scan|Design Foundation Fellowship Program was established in 2005 and the first Fellowship awards were given in 2006 to US students for study in Denmark during the 2007 calendar year. Fellowships are meant to provide students with an opportunity to spend a full academic semester in Denmark focusing on a particular field of study. Formal exchange agreements are now in place between the University of Washington and the following Danish Institutions:
- University of Copenhagen -- Film and Media Studies, Nordic languages, Anthropology, History,
and Comparative Literature.
- Aarhus University -- Political Science and Social Science.
- Aalborg University -- Sustainable Energy Planning and Mangement Program.
- Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts -- School of Architecture & Urban Planning,
-- Landscape Architecture.
- Copenhagen Business School -- Masters of Business Administration Program.
Additional institutions and programs will be added as the Fellowship program develops.
The Fellowships are awarded to both Graduate and advanced undergraduate students for study in Denmark. The Fifteen Thousand Dollar ($15,000) Graduate Fellowship (Ten Thousand Dollar ($10,000) Undergraduate Fellowship) allows a student to earn UW credit for coursework taught in English at distinguished Danish educational institutions. *The 2008-2009 Fellowships have been increased 30% due to the weak US Dollar.
Fellowships are also awarded to both Graduate and advanced undergraduate students from Denmark for study at the University of Washington. The first Fellowship awards were given in 2007 for study in the US for the 2007-2008 academic year. The Foundation awards six (6) Fellowships for study in Denmark during the Fall semester and six (6) Fellowships for study in Denmark during the Spring semester.
The Fellowship program also provides on-site coordinators in both Copenhagen and Seattle to provide a contact person for the students and to organize several student directed outings. The exchange experience is greatly enhanced by the ability to explore the host country. Our Seattle Coordinator is Ms. Anni Fuller and our Denmark Coordinator is Ms. Marianne Stolen.
The Danish Fellows visited Mount St. Helens, skiied at Whistler Resort in British Columbia, Canada, went whale watching in the San Juan Island, and held a farewell BBQ. The US Fellows traveled to Lillehammer, Norway, visited Louisianna- museum of modern art and the Karen Blixen museum, visited the Copenhagen Opera House, and explored the Danish coast.
An award ceremony is held for both Danish and US Fellows (Spring) in Seattle in September. An additional award ceremony for the Danish fellows is scheduled for the annual 4th of July celebration held at Rebild National Park outside of Aalborg, Denmark July 2008.
An award ceremony for the US Fellows (Fall) and the first annual Alumni gathering will be held in early April, 2009
