Rebild is a small village in Northern Jutland, Denmark. The Rebild National Memorial Park, originally 200 acres of hilly, heather-covered land, was bought in 1911 with funds raided by Danish Americans under the leadership of Dr. Max Henius from Chicago. In 1912 Max Henius presented the deed to the land to H.M. King Christian X as a permanent memorial to Danish Americans.
The first Rebild Committee was formed with President Taft accepting the honorary chairmanship. In 1930 the Danish Government added two tracts of land to the park.
Located in the park, the Lincoln Log Cabin, built of American timbers, houses a collection of authentic immigrant furnishings and relics from the American prairie. Top Huset, a preserved old Danish farmhouse, is now a museum
US Independence Day
Every July 4 since 1912, except for the two world wars, large crowds have gathered in the heather-covered hills of Rebild to celebrate US Independence Day.
The festival is an expression of gratitude to the land which welcomed more than 300,000 Danish immigrants, and the tradition has been maintained in order to strengthen the ties of friendship between the USA and Denmark. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of Danish-Americans and others have joined with Danes in this celebration.
The Stars and Stripes of the USA and the Danish Dannebrog flag are flown side-by-side in a natural amphitheater in the hills of Rebild. Music, entertainment, community singing, and speeches by prominent Americans and Danes are expressions of the bonds which unite the USA with Denmark.
