What We Support
University of Washington CBE - Urban Design Intern Program
Education and Career AdvancementThe University of Washington Urban Design / Landscape Architecture Intern Program (previously the Gehl Architects Internship program) was created to facilitate student immersion in the field of landscape architecture. This immersive learning experience is multi-dimensional, integrative, and forged through social relationships as well as practical application. Students work directly with professionals, faculty, and local stakeholders.
Each year two College of Built Environments students work as paid interns on a Seattle-based urban design project for the Green Futures Lab during spring and summer. In the fall, the interns work with an urban design firm in Copenhagen for 16 weeks on the Seattle project, as well as the firm’s international projects. Firm hosts have included Gehl Architects and Schulze + Grassov.
Interns are selected from the group which participates in the Travel Study Tour and Master Studio, and apply Danish Architects' methods to current projects.
This program is managed and facilitated by the University of Washington - Green Futures Lab.

2022 Publication: Designing the Climate Responsible City
With cities consuming significantly more energy and producing more greenhouse gas emissions, cities, and urban areas more broadly are critical in mitigating, or reducing the severity of, global climate change. 2022 Interns, Sarah Lukis and Erin Irby, worked together to create The Climate Responsible City booklet to try and address this issue. The Climate Responsible City suggests alternative design actions based upon two different energy contexts in which urban designers may work to achieve climate-positive outcomes for the climate responsible city.

My stay in Copenhagen was probably one of the best experiences I have ever had. Not only was work challenging and educational, I produced wonderful material for my own professional portfolio.
My experience in Copenhagen played a pivotal role in my development as a designer. While in Copenhagen, I got to experience the value of sustainable transpiration infrastructure firsthand such as the benefits it provides to resident’s health and wellbeing. The danish immersion experience provided by the Scan|Design Foundation + The Green Futures Lab is the most impactful experience I have had as a designer.
What I learned in Denmark will have a life-long influence on my professional and personal life, and has opened my eyes to world-class public space and climate change design.
