What We Support

University of Washington School of Medicine - Innovative Pain Research Grants

This program was established in 2013 to support projects that may be too innovative and speculative for traditional funding sources but still have a high likelihood of producing important findings. It is expected that investigations supported by these grants will yield high impact findings and result in major grant applications and significant publications in high impact journals. The ultimate goal of the program is to improve the lives of people affected by pain. We encourage applications for research proposals that involve new interdisciplinary and inter-professional collaborations and that are innovative and novel.

Scan Design Foundation Research Innovation Awards program provide research awards (typically $20,000 - $50,000) to University of Washington faculty and students who are working to deepen our understanding of pain and improve our systems for treating it. Investigators across all stages of their career and from any of the University of Washington affiliated departments are encouraged to apply for this funding. Eligible projects should be completed with one year of project support.

The first research grants were awarded on May 1, 2014

While there are a variety of large funding agencies that support biomedical research (NIH, for example), funding awards that support the work required to cultivate new projects, in particular to support 'proof-of-concept' studies of new ideas, are rare. The Scan Design award fills this gap, providing us with the support we need to develop an exciting new idea into a project that will be competitive for federal funding.
