What We Support

University of Wisconsin-Madison - Fellowship Program

  Education and Career Advancement

The Scan Design Foundation (SDF) Fellowship Program, established at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in Fall 2010 through the generous contributions of Inger and Jens Bruun, aims to strengthen Danish-American relations. The program provides scholarship opportunities to environmentally-focused Danish and UW-Madison students while abroad with enriching activities during their time or upon their return to UW-Madison, respectively. The program cultivates fellowship between Danish and American students united by a mutual commitment to sustainable development, with a pronounced focus on environmental and cultural sustainability established in Fall 2023.

Fellowships are meant to provide students from all academic fields of study with an opportunity to spend a full academic semester or year in Denmark. Formal exchange agreements are in place between the University of Wisconsin and the following Danish Institutions:

  • University of Copenhagen (KU)
  • Aarhus University (AU)
  • Copenhagen Business School (CBS)
  • Danish Technical Institute (DTU)

Students may also participate in Danish Institute of Study Abroad (DIS) experiences or research experiences in Denmark.

The quality of my study abroad experience was amazing. It’s indescribable and would go off the scale if I tried to rate it.

The Fellowships are awarded to both graduate and undergraduate students for study in Denmark. Fellowships are available for either one semester or the academic year. Many of the Danish Universities provide free pre-semester Danish Language and Scandinavian Culture Classes for International Students. The Foundation provides a stipend for all Fellowship recipients who choose to participate in these classes.

Danish Student Scholarships

Fellowships are also awarded to both graduate and undergraduate students from Denmark for study at the University of Wisconsin. The first Fellowship awards were given in 2010 for study in the US during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The Foundation has established the Scan Design Foundation Danish Scholars Fund at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. The Fund awards scholarships to Danish students studying at the University and accepted as Scan Design Foundation Fellows.

On-Site Coordinators

As part of the Fellowship program, the Foundation also provides an excursion budget and on-site coordinators in Madison to organize and lead several student-directed cultural and experiential outings in the host country. The Foundation believes that the exchange experience is greatly enhanced by the ability to explore the host country and form friendships with host University students.

Scan|Design is an incredible institution and the fact that they provide so many fun activities and experiences is a very unique chance […] Scan|Design helped me with getting a better personal experience in Denmark because of the exposure to different aspects of the culture. I think there are parts of the Danish culture I would not have experienced without the Fellowship Program.
