University of Washington - Fellowship and Scholarship Programs
Education and Career AdvancementThe Scan Design Foundation Fellowship Program at the University of Washington (UW) was established in 2005. The program is designed to foster Danish-American relations. The first Fellowship awards were given in 2006 to University of Washington students for study in Denmark during the 2007 calendar year and to Danish University students for study at the University of Washington during the 2007-2008 academic year.
The Scan Design Foundation provides fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students from all academic fields of study who have been accepted to study abroad in Denmark and have identified one or more courses in Denmark that focus on environmental sustainability in its various facets. Fellowships provide students from all academic fields of study with an opportunity to spend a summer, a semester, or a full academic year in Denmark or Seattle.
UW's Danish Study Abroad programs include exchanges with:
- University of Copenhagen (KU)
- Copenhagen Business School (CBS)
- Aarhus University
- Aarhus School of Architecture
- Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts
- DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia
The Scan Design Foundation - UW fellowship program was directed by Professor Marianne Stecher from the UW Scandinavian Studies Department from 2006 to 2010. The program is currently run by the UW College of Built Environments.
Studying in Denmark
Many of the Danish Universities offer free pre-semester Danish Language and Scandinavian Culture Classes for International Students prior to the start of the semester. The Foundation strongly encourages participation and provides a stipend for all Fellowship recipients who choose to participate in these classes.
The Foundation believes that the exchange experience is greatly enhanced by the opportunity to meet other students who have been in the program to explore the host country. Opportunities to meet other students are provided in Copenhagen and in Seattle. Student-directed cultural and experiential outings in the host country are facilitated.
