About the Human Library
The Human Library Organization is an international non-profit headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Human Library serves as a global learning platform where people can “borrow” a person instead of a book, to engage in open and honest conversations that challenge prejudice and promote understanding.
The Human Library or “Menneskebiblioteket” as it is called in Danish, was created in Copenhagen in the spring of 2000 by Ronni Abergel and his brother Dany and colleagues Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen.
Human Library Café Initiative
In 2025, Scan Design Foundation started partnering with the Human Organization North America to support general activities and programs of local book depots in the US.
'Local Book Depots' serve as community hubs, where trained volunteers coordinate events and maintain a diverse catalog of “Books” representing different lived experiences.
The focus is on independently delivered activities in the communities where human library book depots are based. SDF's support will be used to enable the book depots to remain active and host pop-up Human Library Book Café events in neutral spaces.
From September to November 2025, host book café sessions will take place in:
- California
- Indiana
- Illinois
- New York
