University of Washington CBE - Master Studio Architecture Program
Education and Career AdvancementThe University of Washington-College of Built Environments received a grant in 2010 to pilot the 2011 Scan Design Foundation by Inger & Jens Bruun Distinguished Visiting Professor Master Studio in the Department of Architecture. The Department invited Lene Tranberg, an esteemed Danish architect, to Seattle to co-teach the Master Class.
Based on the overwhelming success of the 2011 pilot program, the Foundation awarded a grant to the University of Washington-College of Built Environments in 2011 to establish The Scan Design Foundation by Inger & Jens Bruun Distinguished Visiting Professor Master Studio. The College of Built Environments invites a Danish designer/educator who has distinguished themselves through a sustained record of exemplary design work and teaching. The visiting professor co-teaches a master architecture studio at the University of Washington during Fall quarter.
The Department of Architecture assigns a regular faculty member to work with the visiting professor in establishing the logistics of the studio and continuing the work of the studio between visits. The Visiting Professor teaches the second, sixth, and 10th week of the quarter. A public lecture is also held by each architect during their visit. Rob Peña is the current program leader.
2022 Scan Design Foundation Studio: People + Planet Positive Housing
This studio worked under the guidance of Kasper Guldager Jensen, co-founder of the Danish property developer Home. Earth, and Lasse Lind, director of GXN, the research and sustainability arm of the Danish architecture studio 3XN Architects. Both firms are working on green innovation in design, exploring upcycling and design for disassembly, and applying Doughnut Economics as a framework for the development of new housing in Denmark and beyond.
The chosen site, situated in the Amager Øst neighborhood, currently hosts a kindergarten and an industrial maker’s space. The objective is to develop a mixed-use cohousing development that is people and planet positive.
The studio book developed distills concepts and ideas from the studio's site visits and the lectures presented during the two-week trip to Copenhagen in September 2022. All experts in their fields, the speakers provided insights into many dimensions of creating affordable, socially and environmentally sustainable housing in Denmark. These expert presentations formed the knowledge base for the studio and guided the research, ethnographic interviews, and the site analysis for the project.

Dorte Mandrup-Poulsen
Dorte Mandrup-Poulsen, the principal partner at Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter, was the second Scan Design Foundation Distinguished Visiting Professor. Founded in June 1999 in Copenhagen, Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter is an award-winning firm based in Copenhagen that engages in a wide variety of projects, including housing, master plans and office buildings. Among their notable projects are the Holmbladsgade Sports and Cultural Center, the Holmbladsgade Community Center, the Herstedlund Cultural Center, and the renovation of Arne Jacobsen's historic Munkegårdsskole. They also recently converted the Jægersborg Water Tower into a mixed-use building with a youth centre and residences, where common balconies add new sculptural layers that enhance the distinctive character of the tower.
In 2012, Dorte Mandrup taught a Master Architecture Studio during Spring Quarter at the University of Washington with Associate Professor Peter Cohan. The project for the studio was to develop a public program for a complex site in an underserved part of Seattle with the intent of engaging and activating the neighborhood around it.
Dorte Mandrup taught another Master Architecture Studio with Peter Cohan during the Spring Quarter of 2013 at the University of Washington. The primary goal of the studio was to examine how we can shape architectural ideas to reinforce the human scale and space of the city. The studio proposed design solutions for the Belltown Bluff portion of the Seattle Waterfront Plan that connect to the waterfront and the already developed portions of the plan, while providing amenities for and responding to the existing neighborhood context.

Erling Christoffersen
Erling Christoffersen is a professor at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) in Denmark. His training as both a cabinetmaker and an architect allows him to teach prototyping as a part of the design process. In his furniture design courses, workshops, and master classes, the emphasis is on the study of materials such as solid timber, plywood, and veneer in order to challenge the materials and find the design that can best expose their inner qualities - to put it simply, "to ask what the materials want".
The furniture design studio was co-taught with Associate Professor, Kimo Griggs, during Winter Quarter 2014. The studio required that each student design, develop, and finish a full-scale piece of furniture. Erling Christoffersen held a public lecture on February 5th 2014 in Seattle during his visit.

"Our Urban Living Room" is also the name of Stubbergaard's new book. At the beginning of the quarter, students took a trip to visit their project sites in Nordhavn, Copenhagen. Each site required students to explore transportation infrastructure, creating new cultural space for social interaction, and transforming existing buildings.
During the autumn of 2020, Dan Stubbergaard returned to the University of Washington in Seattle as the Distinguished Visiting Professor. Stubbegaard taught a Master Studio with Associate Professor, Peter Cohan, in the Department of Architecture.
